2010 FIFA World Cup Is Coming Soon

§ August 31st, 2010 § Filed under Uncategorized § Tagged § No Comments

2010-fifa-world-cup-is-coming-soon

The World Cup, formally known as the FIFA World Cup, is an international football competition contested by the men’s national teams of the members of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport’s global governing body. The championship has been awarded every four years since the first tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not contested because of the World War II.

During the 18 tournaments that have been held, seven nations have won the title. Brazil is the only team to have played in every tournament and have won the World Cup five times. Italy is the reigning champion and has won four titles, and Germany is next with three. The other former champions are Uruguay, the winner of the inaugural tournament, and Argentina, with two titles each, and England and France, with one title each.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be the 19th FIFA World Cup, and it is scheduled to take place between 11 June and 11 July, 2010 in South Africa. The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be the culmination of a qualification process that began in August 2007 and involved 204 of the 208 FIFA national teams. As such, the number of the competing nations is equal to that of those who participated in the 2008 Summer Olympics.

This will be the first time that the tournament has been hosted by an African nation, after South Africa beat Morocco and Egypt in an all-African bidding process. This decision has left the Oceania Football Confederation as the only confederation yet to host the FIFA World Cup.

The most recent World Cup was held in Germany in 2006, and the 2014 World Cup will be held in Brazil.

Daphne Guinness dresses for grannies

§ August 30th, 2010 § Filed under Uncategorized § Tagged , , , § No Comments

For someone as avant garde as Daphne Guinness, you could be forgiven for thinking she dresses for an artisan, or for her fashion-admiring fans, but you’d be wrong. No, Daphne Guinness doesn’t dress for anyone other than the grannies who sit in airports.

Apparently old people find her style incredibly amusing, especially when she pulls out her party trick.

“I do it for the old people who laugh at me in airports,” she tells the Cut of the way she dresses. “I like to walk in with my heels and stand in front of people on their laptops and then drop down and suddenly they look up and you’re ten inches shorter. And it gives everybody a good laugh. You can only dress like this if you get the humour of it.”

Rather refreshing, really, that for someone with a status as iconic as hers, Daphne’s still in it for the fun of it all. The weekend just gone at the AIDS Community Research Initiative of America at Steven Klein’s Hamptons estate is an example in case. Women wore summer cocktail dresses and the men bow-ties, but Daphne dressed in the way we imagine a corpse bride would after discovering the word ethereal (that’s one for the imagination, eh) – or, in her own words, “really weird”.

If you want us, we’ll be at the airport dressed in beige slacks and pop socks sporting a suitable blue rinse – we really want to see Daphne’s drop-down trick for ourselves.

French Connection AW10 video campaign

§ August 30th, 2010 § Filed under Uncategorized § Tagged , , , , , , § No Comments

We do love a good video campaign, and French Connection’s AW10 ad is especially good, and rather funny. Plus, it’s directed by cinematographer Eduard Grau, the very talented man who worked with Tom Ford on A Single Man. There needn’t be a better introduction, really.

We caught a sneak peek over the weekend, and if you’re partial to a beard, a French accent and a dollop of dry humour, we think you’ll love it as much as we do.

It’s probably worth mentioning that the new collection looks pretty great, too. The brand took a new direction last year, and it seems to be paying off with fashion-forward prints, chunky knits and soft cuts.

Take a look at the collection for yourself here – there’s a great printed shirt-dress and some super cool clog wedge boots we’ve got our eye on – and and don’t forget to check out the campaign video whist you’re there.

Seeing Things | Gaetano Pesce in L.A.

§ August 29th, 2010 § Filed under Uncategorized § No Comments

DESCRIPTIONCourtesy Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA). The exhibition “Gaetano Pesce: Pieces From A Larger Puzzle,” includes a 1985 prototype (from the collection of Michael and Susan Rich) of I Feltri, a stylized version of the classic wingback chair made of resin-infused felt. Photo courtesy Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA).

“Pieces From a Larger Puzzle,” an exhibition devoted to the work of the Italian architect and designer Gaetano Pesce, opens today at the Italian Cultural Institute in Los Angeles. The exhibition — the first of the iconoclastic designer’s work to be shown on the West Coast — provides a comprehensive overview of Pesce’s remarkable 40-year career and includes prototypes, production models and rarely seen video footage.

DESCRIPTIONCourtesy Collage Classics, Dallas, Photograph by John Geresi. A view of the exhibition with the Golgotha chair, made of cloth impregnated with resin, one of Pesce’s earliest experiments with industrial materials.

Pesce, who is known for his experiments with industrial materials like polyurethane foam, resin and plastics, celebrates the unconventional in his evocative, boldly colored furniture and objects. Influenced by both the highly detailed work of his teacher, the influential architect and designer Carlo Scarpa, and by the Arte Povera movement’s use of everyday, often crudely constructed materials, Pesce fuses both high and low in his work.

The exhibition curators — John Geresi, a banker who is also a design aficionado; Peter Loughrey, the director of LA Modern Auctions; and Francesca Valente, the director of the Italian Cultural Institute — have done the same with their witty installation design. Pesce’s misshapen, brightly colored resin and plastic vases are displayed on an ad hoc bookshelf made of plywood planks balanced on the rungs of an industrial stepladder, while tables, chairs and sofas sit on rough wooden shipping pallets, as if they’ve just been uncrated.

Much of the work on display is from the collection of Michael and Susan Rich, a Los Angeles couple who have been acquiring Pesce’s work over the last 15 years. The first gallery includes many of the designer’s most iconic pieces, from the late-1960s “Up” series to the Tramonto a New York sofa, which resembles a bright orange sun setting behind New York’s skyline. Visitors will also be able to see some of Pesce’s recent work, including customizable, limited-edition plastic shoes from the Brazilian company Melissa. In the second gallery, the curators make the connection between student and teacher by displaying fragile objects, including invitations and book covers made of resin, in cases designed by Scarpa’s son Tobia. The exhibition is on view through Aug. 31.

Summer Soundtrack | Frederic Sanchez for Louis Vuitton

§ August 29th, 2010 § Filed under Uncategorized § No Comments

DESCRIPTIONValerio Mezzanotti for The New York Times

The soundtrack from the spring 2011 Louis Vuitton show was a mix of very ethereal, melodic electronica that reminded me of Tangerine Dream’s tracks for “Risky Business” and Giorgio Moroder’s ambient music for “American Gigolo.” Here’s the track list from Frederic Sanchez who did the music for the show — the perfect background music for the summer and a nice alternative to those overplayed “chill out” compilations.
